Back Door Welcome

Welcome!

We live in a small town

where family, friends and neighbors alike

all use the back door.

So I created a special back door welcome :)

The candle stand in the back I found at an estate sale a few years ago

and the gold chair was a recent yard sale find.

The little welcome sign I found at Dollarma

and you can see my little blue milk tin in the background.

The freshened up tea kettle sits just perfectly

on the chair.

Since you're here let me show you around!

Our apple tree is in full bloom.

I am hoping for lots of apple juice this fall.

While working up the garden this year

hubby hit what he thought was a large rock with the rototiller.

It turned out to be a large chunk of asphalt.

He had to dig down deep and break it up

in order to get it out.

We always find interesting things in our garden each year.

There's my hubby on his new toy.

Yup, our old lawn tractor basiclly fell apart

after the first mow this year - literally,

so it was time for a new one.

We can't complain though as our old mower

belonged to his parents when they lived on their farm

and they gave it to us when they moved

and we had it for over 12 years.

So, I would say we definately got our use out of it.

The lilacs are beginning to bloom.

And under the lilac are these pretty little flowers.

Sorry, I do not remember their name.

The Lily of the Valley's will be blooming soon.

And before you go let me show you this beautiful pot.

It was a Mother's Day gift from my parents.

My dad grew all the flowers himself.

It's not in full bloom yet

but I can't wait until it is!

Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble

Nothing says spring is here like this Rhubarb Crumble.

I found the original recipe in the Company's Coming Lunches Cookbook.

It is super delicious,

especially when made with fresh rhubarb and strawberries.

Ingredients

1/2  cup butter or margarine

1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1-1/2 cups rolled oats

1 cup brown sugar, packed

4-1/2 cups rhubarb, cut in 1 inch lengths

1/2 cup strawberries, cut up

(I use strawberries that I have on hand so the final total

for the rhubarb and strawberries should be 5 cups)

1 cup water

1 cup granulated sugar

2 Tbsp. cornstarch

1 tsp. vanilla

Melt butter in medium saucepan.

Stir in flour, rolled oats and brown sugar.

Press half of this into ungreased 9x9-inch pan.

Arrange rhubarb and strawberries over top.

Stir water, sugar, cornstarch and vanilla together

in separate saucepan over medium heat

until it boils and thickens.

Pour over rhubarb.

Cover with remaining crumbs.

Bake in 350F oven about 45 minutes

or until cooked and browned.

Cuts into 9 pieces.

Leftovers may be frozen.

Tea for Three

I invited my mom over for tea.

She doesn't get out as much as she would like to

since my dad's heart surgery

so I thought she would enjoy an afternoon out.

We love going to a little teahouse in the city

but that wasn't an option right now

so I thought we'd have a tea at my house.

I received a dozen beautiful roses for Mother's Day

so I thought roses would be the theme.

This is one of my favorite tablecloths.

I just love the color of the roses

and the cutwork around the middle and edges.

This rose dish my mom gave to me awhile back.

It served the Rhubarb Crumble for our tea.

And this little dish I found at a Thrift store.

It served the Cream Puffs.

I set out the teacups and plates.

These belonged to my Grandmother.

I just love the roses inside the cups.

And then I added little flower candles

and used a napkin ring as a candle holder.

These little rose plates I found at a yard sale.

They are an exact match to the roses on the tablecloth.

I placed the rose teapot on a cake stand

and covered it with a pink crochet doilie.

I added two of my daughter's rose teacups for interest.

The jug in the background holds

Iced Canadian Berry Herbal tea.

 I also served Saskatoon Berry Herbal tea.

It was such a relaxing, enjoyable afternoon

as my mom, myself and my daughter

enjoyed our tea.

Milk Can Makeover

I found these two little milk jugs

and watering can while at a yard sale.

They were so cute I couldn't pass them up

and I knew they could be so much more.

So when I got home I dug around to see what I could find

to freshen up these little treasures.

I found this beautiful light blue spray paint

that needed to be used.

While I was at it I decided to also freshen up this teapot

 my mother-in-law gave to me.

It originally belonged to her mom and was used for making tea.

When it was passed along to me it had become a flower planter.

So they all got a coat of light blue paint

but I wasn't done with them.

I had some decals that I thought

would give them that finishing touch.

Butterflies and flowers - my favorite!

These two will show up in future posts.

As for the milk cans

they will feature my fresh flowers from the garden.

Right now they hold apple blossoms and lilacs!

What a beautiful fragrance as you come to our back door!
