The Simple Woman's Daybook

For today... Sunday, November 25, 2012

Outside my window... It is still dark.

I am thinking... How I wish I was feeling better.

I am thankful for... A warm, cozy home.

From the kitchen... Nothing this week as we will be away.

I am wearing... Sweat pants and a sweat shirt - ready to head out for a morning walk before church.

I am creating... Embroidered Pillowcases.

I am reading... How Then Shall We Live by Francis A. Schaeffer

I am praying for... Safe travels this week.

Pondering these words... Joy can be real only if people look on their life as a service, and have a definite object in life outside themselves and their personal happines. ~Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy~

I am still hoping... For a trip to the moutains.

I am hearing... The furnace running.

Around the house... Trying to finish the Christmas decorating before we go away.

One of my favorite things... Christmas decor :)

A few plans for the rest of the week... Travelling, Resting & Relaxing

Here is a picture thought I am sharing...

I Love My Snowglobes

I love my snowglobes
and I am so excited this year
because I get to enjoy them even more.

This summer we added an electric fireplace set into a bookshelf
which gives me a long, low surface to work with.

It is the perfect spot to display my favorites Christmas snowglobes.

In previous years my snowglobes were displayed
on top of the old upright piano.

While they looked quite lovely up there
I couldn't enjoy them as much as I can now
since they are on display at a lower height.

But it's not all snowglobes!

This little village scene lights up and plays music.

And these little ponds are adorable.
When you wind them up the skaters glide around the pond to music.

So, these Christmas evenings I get to sit by my fireplace
with my stitching while I enjoy the Christmas
lights reflecting off of my snowglobes
which brings me such delight!

Christmas Cardinal

I love cardinals.
There's just something about them
that I am inexplicably drawn too.

In fact, if I see something with a cardinal on it
I am very hard pressed to pass it by.

So, when I saw this little Cardinal
cross-stitch picture I knew I needed to stitch it.

I am so pleased with how it turned out
and can't wait to display it for Christmas!

Brownies Two Ways

You know those little cookbooks put together
for fundraisers or family reunions?
Sometimes you can find hidden gems of recipes in them.
Such is the case with this Brownie recipe by Julie Godden which
I found in the Stirring Your Heart for Watoto's Children Cookbook.
Not only is it moist and delicious the first day,
but it stays that way for days afterwards.
It is one of my favorite things to send to my daughter in college
as I know they will taste just as moist and delicious
when she gets them as the day I made them.

Ingredients
1-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup cocoa
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup oil
4 eggs
1/4 cup cold water
1/2 cup chocolate chips
2 cups sugar

Place all ingredients in bowl in order listed.
Beat by hand or on low speed of mixer until smooth.
Don't overbeat.

Pour into greased 9x13 pan.
Bake at 350F or until center is done,
about 25 minutes.

These make a great Brownie Sundae when you top a piece or two
with ice cream and drizzle with chocolate sauce.

And if there's any left they are delicious just as they are
and they also are great to pack in lunches!
Such a quick and simple recipe
for a yummy dessert or lunchtime treat!

Colors of Fall Table

It is almost that time to begin thinking winter tablescapes
so I thought I would get in a final few fall tablescapes
before the snow really begins to fly.

I started off with my brown tablecloth
with delicate leaf details.

Pumpkins are a fall decorating staple
and I love the orange color.

Some pretty colored fall leaves.

Some deep red flowers and some pumpkin candles.

Makes for a pretty centerpiece.

Added my simple white dishes with beige napkins
and a delicate little leaf.

And the table is dressed in pretty fall color.
