Little Night Table Makeover

My dad built this little night table for me

when I was about 10 years old.

It was one of the first pieces of furniture he built.

When I got older he built me a whole new bedroom set

and this little night table got shuffled around

and eventually became my daughters.

It's age was showing

and my plan was to move it out to the greenhouse

when we converted my daughter's room to a guest room.

BUT....

when I mentioned it to my daughter

(who is now married and lives in another country)

she said,

"MOM, 

I'm very emotionally attached to that little night table. 

Please don't get rid of it."

So, the little night table was saved

from being relegated to the greenhouse

and the makeover began with two coats of fresh white paint.

I ordered some vinyl from Amazon

and hubby got in on the action

and helped with the cutting and applying of the vinyl

I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.

My daughter loves Poppies and Bees

so I lined the drawer with Poppy & Bee scented liner.

This 40+ year old night table that

a father built for his daughter,

and was then passed down to his granddaughter

now has new life and is waiting

to be passed down 

to his future great-granddaughter,

and maybe even onto his great-great-granddaughter.

Concrete Blocks to Planters

 

While removing an old dog run that was in our yard

we found a whole bunch of conrete blocks

underneath the gravel layer.

 

 

I immediately knew that they would be good for something.

 

 

They had obviously been used for other purposes before

as some had remains of white paint

while others had brown with turquoise peeking through.

 

 

So, the first step was to give them a fresh coat of paint.

I just used up some leftover paint we had kicking around.

I knew I wanted to make them into planters

and put them in front of the storage shed

that hubby had recently put up.

 

 

So I stacked them and filled the holes with dirt.

 

 

I then went hunting for some pansies

and finally found a few at a local greenhouse on clearance.

They were a little worse for wear but I figured

with a little TLC they would perk up.

 

 

And the little planters on each side of the door

just added that little extra touch it needed.

 

 

I do have some more plans for hubby's shed

but don't tell him that ;)

Cutting Flower Basket

After our garden tour we had a presentation on

how to plan and grow a cutting garden.

This is something I had wanted to do for years

and this year I finally have my first one!

One of the recommendations was when going out

in the early morning or evening to collect your flowers

you should cut them and put them directly into cold water.

Now this makes perfect sense,

why didn't I think of it before?

So out I went with my ice cream bucket with some cold water in the bottom.

Unfortunatly, it just didn't work very well

as I had flowers with short stems and long stems.

I needed a better system.

So I went through my pantry and found this old basket.

It is sturdy with a good handle and a good size as well.

I then took three different sizes of canning jars.

The tall one for long stemmed flowers,

the medium for medium stemmed,

and the small for the short stemmed flowers.

There was also enough room for a pair of my gardening gloves

and a sharp knife, which was another recommendation.

She said, "no dull kitchen scissor." - lol.

I added an inch or two of water into each jar

and went to the garden to collect some flowers.

It worked amazingly well.

It was so easy to just put the flowers in the jars,

it looked pretty while you were collecting,

and it was so easy to carry around as I moved

from one section of flowers to the next.

I love it!!

I made three arrangements from this batch of flowers I collected

and when I was done I just set the basket in my back porch,

ready for the next day - and it looks cute sitting there as well :)

I am just so thrilled with this little basket!

It makes cutting and collecting flowers a breeze.

Garden Rewards

We have had a lot of rain here,

so much so that it has been too wet to work in the garden.

However, the sun has finally come out

and that means time to garden.

I was very glad to see that things had grown besides the weeds.

I found a bloom nestled in our pumpkin plant.

And all the moisture has made the rhubarb very lush and red.

And the bean plants are just beginning to bloom.

Although my tomato plants were a little yellow at first

now they are dark green and have some nice size tomatoes on them.

A few tomatoes have some minor hail damage

but if that is the worst of it I am not going to complain.

The flowers in the cutting garden are also beginning to bloom.

The bright orange of the calendula is so cheery!

This is the first year that I have planted strawflowers.

I got a mix called "Brights"

and they are very bright and cheerful.

I have been told that they dry very well

so I am going to try that later in the season.

My dad had some extra plants so he gave some to me.

He says they are type of daisy.

And some of the roses are just beginning to bloom.

But what is the best of all is the freshly picked food for the dinner table!
